Artist Statement
The artist statement is a general introduction to the work
you have already made.
These elements should be included:
The basic themes of your work, briefly explained in two or
three sentences.
How these themes are embodied in your work.
Following paragraphs may cover
some of the following points, if they are important in your
work:
Why you created this work
How you expect he audience to react to your work
How this work differs or grows from your previous work
Where your work fits with contemporary art
How your work fits with other art in a particular group show
or series of performances
Sources for your imagery
Artists whom you admire or artists working with similar themes
An artist statement should be clear and direct. The tone should
be expressive of your work. Many individuals are not interested
in simply purchasing an object but also want to know the artist’s
state of mind and inner thoughts behind the work.
The artist statements are usually about one page in length.
The statement is usually double spaced, in 10-12 point type,
printed on plain paper, with your name and date at the bottom.
Legibility and efficiency are important. You should always
refer to yourself in the first person, not as “the artist”.
The artist statement should feel as if it is coming directly
from you.
